Firefox 2 and the missing close tabs

June 5th, 2007

Firefox icon logo One thing that I missed from Firefox 1.5 was the close tab button at the end of the tab bar.
I have Firefox 2.0 installed at work but never installed it at home because I missed that feature. I always said I would look into it, and I didn’t want to install a plug-in for that. Finally I checked the config and there it was:

It’s pretty simple using:

about:config

Filter: browser.tabs.closeButton

0 – Display a close button on the active tab only
1 – Display a close button on each tab (default)
2 – Don’t display any close buttons
3 – Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.5 behavior)

What about if I want the per tab ones and the one at the end? I like this behaviour in 1.5 (with plugin) because it enabled me to close specific tabs or quickly scan through and close all tabs (repreatedly clicking on the closebutton on the bar)

Jon, You could use the middle button (scroll-wheel) to close specific tabs without having to click on the small close button on each one.
I find it easier to have one close button on a fixed position. And the wheel-button is a blessing :-)
